Stop the Insanity....
the senate voted 48 to 50 in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage today. although this is good news in the short-term, in the long-term it brings to question a couple of things.
1. why is it that it took rachael's blog to bring this very important impending vote to my attention in the first place? true, i don't read the newspaper every day cover to cover, but c'mon i watch the news every morning! why wasn't this a bigger deal? jesus some dead tiger (poor bobo) got more news play!
2. why was this vote even this close? it was 12 votes short of a 2/3 majority, so that's somewhat comforting, but c'mon people. that's still too close.
3. finally, why are valuable tax $ being wasted on making an amendment to the constitution that would ban people from getting married? what has happened to our country that makes it ok to do this?
as someone now ensconced in a traditional marriage, i cannot understand how having ted and fred (or gladys and alice) saying "i do" in any way threatens my marriage or my future family. can anyone explain this to me? anyone? bueller?
ok i'm done.
thanks rachael for keeping me in the loop.
oh and HAPPY BASTILLE DAY!!!!!!!! let's have cake!

I live a lot of the time in a very very small town. Since the current idiots assumed the mantel of power, I've started trekking forth early each AM to buy the New York Times. I just felt that there was a news black out in my daily life. I'm not sure whether stations don't have time to cover things, or [more sinister] the media companies are controlled by supporters of the current admin. In any event, I actually felt that to survive this four years, I'd have to make the effort read the Times each day. There is no question that I've got a better handle on things now. Needless to say, since we have a leader who does not read, I'm sure they don't expect any of us to read either.

I caught wind of the vote in Canada, if that's any consolation. We Canadians (did I just refer to myself as Canadian? Wee!) are quite obsessive about staying on top of US news. But as for why some people say the institution of marriage is threatened: I'd say it's an excuse for bigotry. IMHO.

This subject is obviously very important to both Rhiannon and myself, and like you I didn't hear about it until the vote was over. I was very much WTF when I found that there had been a vote and not even the Freedom to Marry coalition sent me the news. Bizarre.

You're welcome!
Isn't it odd how fast the vote came up and was over with? It will only get more press, one can hope, as it goes to the house, etc., and I'll keep keepin' you posted. It feels good to hear your support, doll.
