Bad Publicity
i'm an average knit/life blogger. i have my little circle of pals (hi pals!!) who read me regularly, and i imagine a larger group of lurkers who come out every so often to comment when i'm ranting about bathroom etiquette or show pictures of my dog. yarn harlot has commented (oh yes she has!) and crazy aunt purl and i are *like this*. i blog because it's fun for me. i don't try to win any awards (i don't have the time, patience, nor the talent to even compete) and i've gotten much more out of this experience than i ever thought possible. on average i get about 150 hits a day that i can tell (not counting bloglines). not too shabby.
so imagine my surprise when i checked my stats and saw that in the past 12 hours or so, i've gotten over 800 1000 hits! so i investigated....
grumperina is dissing me. AND SO ARE HER COMMENTERS!!! ok one commenter. but still. so now 800+ people think i'm lame. and at least two people have come out and said that my work is crap. fine. be that way. have they bothered to look at my other work? probably not. whatever. i don't care what they think of me.
my mother loves me.
stitchy says my mother thinks i suck too.

update: ok, before this gets out of hand. not that it's close or anything. as kate says, one of the problems with the internet is the lack of voice tone and facial expressions. (and of course the possibility that i'm not nearly as funny as i think i am). i'm not upset. i'm not hurt. it's all good.

Crocheting covers for tissue boxes: Eh, not my thing, maybe questionably tasteful.
Knitting sweaters for soap dispensers: Sheer brilliance.

I am a reader of both blogs. That did seem kinda hateful. Maybe you should make and send her some of your luv-i-lees!! I would proudly display them in my house (pink & green for the bathroom). I have friends that poke fun at the fact that I knit. The ones that are really mean don't get yummy-knits for Christmas. The others pick out patterns (and sometimes yarn) and say, "I want this one, too". As we say in Texas, "Piss on 'em!" It's your craft!! Make whatever the hell you want and keep posting! Even if we don't like something someone has made, it is always going to be inspiration for something else!!

I linked to your blog because of Grumperina's comment. Her self-assurance, talent, and speedy knitting/reporting keep me coming back to her blog weekly. Honestly, as an outsider (not knowing either of you personally), I thought she said that because she has mentioned in the past how little she knows about crocheting. So it sounded like a little jealous/jesting comment, if you get my meaning. I hope it was misunderstood internet tone.

I find it extremely interesting that Grumperina would make such comments about your crochet work. I just finished reading a well written commentary on her site here:
http://www.grumperina.com/comboknit.htm
about combination knitting, where she used the words RIGHT AND WRONG WAY OF KNITTING; REJECTION; ACCEPTANCE; AND VALIDATION of different ways of knitting. ummmm.........

(giggles quietly over the whole thing)

Well, see, I'm torn here. Should I leave a wise cracking comment or a "there-there" type? Hmm. What to do..what to dooooo.
okay, here it is:
Stand up. Be who you are. Even if people hate all over you!
:)

i am one of the people who found your blog via that post. this conveying tone over the internet thing? maybe that is the problem becuase that comment did not seem funny at all, it just seemed really mean.
i dont think those people who left negative comments are representative of the thousand new visitors, i have looked through your gallery and and i really like your work.

HAHAHAA
You got called craptastic!
Hey, at least you were honest with the extent of your mad craft skillz. Not everyone goes public with needlepoint housies and kleenex cozies.
Bravery!!!

I love that I can hear you Kathy, Debbie, and Jackie in all of this. It makes it so much funnier.

ok -- that's it.
she wants an entire bathroom cozy set. she must!
hehehehe

Dude! You made crocheted soap dispenser cozies!!! Talk about asking for it! Hehe :).
(Maryse's readers - did you really think I was serious? And did you really think Maryse's response was serious? If so, I have to get better at this conveying tone over the Internets thing. Maryse and I understood each other as intended, though, and that's the most important thing.)

You have demonstrated exactly why I don't ever ever ever look at my stats or who's linking to me. I would quit knitting and designing and go hide under my comforter and cry. Grosses bises à toi Maryse. T'inquiète pas. T'es super-chouette et dire des méchancetés sur les autres, c'est naze.

Haha... two comments in one day. But really, none of us are as funny as we *think* we are. I'm a PERFECT example of this, I crack myself up more than anyone I know!

Had I not read G's post earlier today I would have thought that BlogWarI had just started.

Another hug from a loyal reader/commenter. Yeah, I know it was a joke, but still. Your TP box covers are the only ones I'd allow in my house - and that's sayin' something. :::wink:::

Maryse... we all love ya! Like Caro says, even bad publicity is good publicity ;) Sorry if your feelings were hurt, probably one of the major drawbacks of internet relationships is we can't really tell if someone is kidding or not because we can't hear their tone or see their facial expressions. Keep on being you!
Posted by: Kate | March 24, 2006 at 03:16 PM
Hmm, if she was trying to be funny, she didn't really convey it effectively. :(
Posted by: Chris | March 24, 2006 at 03:09 PM
I chose to take Grumpy's comment as a joke, but I can see why your feelings might be hurt. If your crocheted tissuebox covers make you happy, then I love them, too. Not love them like "please make me some," but love them like "oh, look, Maryse has a fever, poor baby." (And this is coming from the woman who thought the crocheted cast iron rooster was the coolest thing ever. Stitchy, I still want that book.)
Speaking of your other work, how about an Olympic scarf update? *Then* those Doubting Thomases over in Grumpyland can get an idea of your real skills!

Don't feel bad. Just be yourself!
Posted by: cheryl | March 24, 2006 at 02:50 PM
There's no such thing as bad publicity. Right?
Posted by: Kat | March 24, 2006 at 02:06 PM
I don't know which made me laugh harder, your post, or Debbie's comment.
Posted by: Jackie | March 24, 2006 at 01:54 PM
I think you are awesome! I don't know if that means much though....
Posted by: Lolly | March 24, 2006 at 01:44 PM
sweeeeeeeet! publicity is publicity, right? ;)
Posted by: caro | March 24, 2006 at 01:43 PM
I *heart* you too. You are the crochet goddess. (And you know that I'm not being snarky; I was beaming when I showed you my crochet book purchases).
Posted by: Kathy | March 24, 2006 at 01:43 PM
eerrrrm, Maryse? Your mother thinks you suck, too.
