Hollyhocks
roses tremieres, or hollyhocks, grow all over the place in the department of charente-maritime where my parents live.
while looking for some information about them for this post, i learned that they're grown in the US as well. this surprised me since to me they're so quintessentially charentais, like oysters, houses covered in white stucco, with red tile roofs and blue shutters, cognac and pineau, and ugly plaid slippers.

Love them by the seaside. They are stalwart flowers, and don't seem to mind New England abuse.

I have some of those that I started from seed- hopefully I'll have some pictures next summer. :)

And I though that those slippers were typically Québécoises!! The roses trémières grow here and sometimes get as high as the houses.

Should I disillusion you and let you know my dad wears those slippers? We buy them at Zellers ...

They're beautiful. We grew them one summer when I was a kid... I should try them again.

Beautiful pictures! My MIL planted hollyhocks the first year we lived here about 5 years ago and they come back every year very pretty.

I have tpones of them. They grow volutarily in my garden: I never know where they'll pop up. We make Hollyhock dolls in August when they're at their prime. Now, they're mostly 7 foot tall stalks with one flower at the top. I can't bear to cut them down, so valiantly they try to keep making blooms.

I love hollyhocks! My mother grows them in her PV backyard...I have yet to plant any. But I must, after seeing these beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing!

I love Hollyhocks but cannot seem to make them bloom very well. Maybe I will try again next year.

Oh sure, hollyhocks grow all over the place. But I have never seen ones right by the sea like that... it makes me want to pack my bag and GO! (And sit in a chair and watch the tide go in and out, with bread and cheese and a carafe of wine...)

I have to tell you that my Mother planted Hollyhocks next to the house for years! (Western Canada). They were planted in this little trench next to the sidewalk and they ALWAYS leaned out over the sidewalk so you couldn't get by without having the darn things in your face. I dislike them with a passion but whatever floats your boat I guess. THey do have pretty flowers but all they do for me is remind me of the constant bickering between my Mom & Dad about those plants and her insistence every year that they stay!

Gorgeous flowers - those colors would make a lovely yarn colorway.
Hee hee - I had a flash to the ugly plaid slippers in Amelie just now...

You always have such lovely pictures! I'm glad I know what those flowers are now. I think I've been getting them confused with hibiscus.
