My Neighborhood
every year at this time of year, i'm caught off guard by the changing of the leaves.
"it's barely labor day. how can the leaves be changing so early? they didn't start changing this early last year, did they?"
yeah they probably did.
i love the fall. it's my favorite time of year. i love the colors, the weather, the blue of the sky, the quality of the light now that the sun is lower in the sky, that makes us all look a little younger and the brisk air that makes me feel a little younger. i love the little acorns.
(hey are these hollyhocks?)
but i'm not ready to let go of summer. i'm a savorer. i'm looking forward to sweater wearing days like the rest of you, but i want fall to come in nice and slow, so it might last that much longer.

Dont' you just love fall, I love it!
Great pictures!

I believe those flowers are rose mallow. They're related to hollyhocks. First cousins or something. ;o)
Fall IS too short. Winter is too short. Spring as well. The only season that's too long is summer!

Home of the yarn monster? I noticed the change on bloglines.
:)
My favorite season is fall. I start to feel alive after the sleepiness of summer!

This whole thing about fall, and not a whit about cider? I'm disappointed. :P

So much eye candy!!!!I wish we would have a fall. We'll have our Indian Summer for the next 2 months, although it's dipping into the low 80s these days. Enjoy!

Yup yup yup! I'm with you, M. And the beautiful New England Autumns are what make the awful New England Winters tolerable.

Fall used to be my favorite season and it's still Dale's. But I honestly love summer these days. Oh, the leaves are pretty and I love wearing a sweater and enjoying the first fire in the woodstove. But after fall comes dreaded winter. Blech.

I have a grudge against fall because of what it presages. I can't stay mad at anything so pretty, though.

Gorgeous post, M. You pretty much summed up how I am feeling right now... I want a nice crisp long fall! ;)

EXACTLY.

Fall is pretty amazing sometimes...except for that nasty winter part. If fall didn't come attached to winter it would be a hundred times better.

They are definitely NOT Hollyhocks. Not sure what they are but they are pretty and I remember HH from my youth and I h.a.t.e. them :(
Love all your pics and your lament about summer ending...great stuff!

Do you happen to know what those purple berries on the bright pink stalks are? They have started growing on the side of my house, too, and the berries look like they would be really good for dyeing purposes. But since the birds haven't touched them, I wonder if they are toxic.
Ah, hang on, I see an earlier commenter called them 'pokeberries'--I'll be off to google now.

Did you change your URL?

I'm thinking maybe rose mallow, too. They're not hollyhocks, and the leaves are all wrong for Rose of Sharon (R of S has leaves that look sort of like cats' paws or maple leaves). You could maybe try dyeing some yarn with those pokeberries. I don't know if it would work but I think pokeberries were used for dye back in the day.
Do you really think we all look younger in the fall? No wonder it's my favorite season.

I'm with you 100%. I LOVE the fall.
And no, I don't think those are hollyhocks. Maybe they're a variety I'm not familiar with, because the flowers look like hollyhocks. But hollyhocks normally have one thick stem that grows up to 6+feet (in ideal conditions). Look here -- http://www.jerometimes.com/hollyhock.html
Your flowers also looks like a Rose of Sharon, but they usually grow from a central bush. Either way, I would guess that your flower is in the hibiscus family. Maybe a Rose Mallow?
Can you post a picture of the whole plant?

The next time you say that you don't write well, I may have to drive out to the 'burbs and smack you.
In a nice way.
