Pahk the Cah
phew ... well that's a relief. even though i've lived in boston for 17 years and in the burbs an additional three, i'm proud to announce that according to this quiz that i swiped from elizabeth, i do not have a boston accent.
and that's wicked good news. no offense to my in laws, my husband, or you other boston area folks, of course.
| What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Midland
"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. | |

How can you say someone is from Boston if the quiz doesn't include questions about syllable-final r??

Midland too, which is nearly correct. Good thing they didn't ask about "creek" and "creak" which sound the same coming from these lips.

It told me I was from Philly! And I've never been there, much less lived there, nor have I lived anywhere nearby.
That's a bad quiz to give a linguist, though. I probably heard differences where most people wouldn't.

I'm with Wendy. I came back 100% Boston accent, but I think it's more in the vowels than in the Wicked or the Pissah. Especially since most people ask me why I don't have a Boston accent and I'm from here. It's the flat Os and Es. (Cot and caught sounding the same, for example)
But this was fun I'm glad you posted it!

Heh, I was Inland North all the way. No surprise, really.

100% Boston accent here. That was a fun one. I sent it to my friend who lives in Arizon (originally from Boston), it'll be interesting to see how hers comes out!

Well it pegged me & my southern drawl! Smart quiz!

I just went and took it and came back "boston" with the bar about three quarters red. What? Impossible! I figured I must not have read things carefully enough, so I went back and did it again, saying all the words aloud and answering very carefully. The result: Boston. With the bar COMPLETELY red.
Obviously that quiz is totally unreliable. Lame. A wicked pissa.

Hey, I don't need no stinkin' quiz to know I got an accent. [Insert accent of Boston Rob here.] And, to make matters more worse [again, more good Boston English] I also LISTEN with a Boston accent. So, even if you aren't from around here, and you say something, my ears are gonna filter it in Baw-ston talk.

I would argue that you could STILL have a Boston accent but not use the vocabulary of the region....
Although, you really do not have one.
