A List of Random Things

hi.  time sure goes by quickly when you're counting squares.  yep, they've started coming in and it's friggin' fantastic.  it's also fun for me because it looks like i'm getting tons of presents.  ha.  i love presents.  even if they aren't for me.  anyway, keep 'em coming.  you have until february 14th to be eligible for the contest.

in other news....

i've been knitting.  a couple of weeks ago i said there was knitting but then i dropped it.  well i've been on fire ....

1.  first, we have my pope hat ... i mean inga hat.

feeling kind of like the pope with my giant pope hat

when i wear it, i do believe i feel closer to our heavenly father.  about 5 inches closer.  yeah it's crazy tall.  oh well.  details on ravelry.

2.  and socks.   these are widdershin socks, a great toe-up heel flap pattern .   details here.  try judy's magic cast-on too.  brilliant.  totally removes the fiddly from toe-up socks.

widdershins heel flap

and 3.  finally, a noro scarf.

1x1 noro kureyon scarf

all started and completed within a 2 week window.  on fire i tell you.  (or as our receptionist at work would say ... ON FIYAH!! these new englanders crack  me up.)

A Contest for Squares

hey everyone!  the response to my call has been awesome.  i know elisa's been really touched and i'm confident that this blanket will be beautiful.

to thank you all for participating, i'm going to have a little contest.  for every square i receive from you, i'll put your name into a hat (or bowl or bag) and award some prizes.  how's that?  i might have more than one prize even.

so, we need a deadline for the contest...how about thursday, february 14th. yep, that's valentines day.  i bet you didn't know i could be a bit of a sentimental sap.

"To the Knit Cave!!!"

hey kids!

know what this symbol means?

knitsignal.0

it means someone needs our help.

elisa's dad is in a VA hospital in iowa far from family and friends and needs a blanket.  and i think that if we all pitch in and knit (or crochet) just one square each,  we can help his daughter give this man a little love and warmth and help him get back on his feet.

so here's the plan:

knit or crochet a square.  preferably in a worsted weight-ish machine washable yarn. this blanket will be at the mercy of the VA laundry service.  i'm sure the laundry staff are very hard working and do an excellent job on laundry, but i think it's safe to say that this blanket will not be hand washed in cold water with eucalan.  just a guess.

try to get this square as close as possible to 8 inches square, blocked.  use a ruler if you have to.  (i know, that was snarky.  but i know how you knitters are about following directions.)

when you're ready to send the square, just contact either me or elisa and we'll send you an address.

boston area knitters who would like to send a square can give/send the square to me and i'll send them off to elisa.

thanks kids!

ETA:  some of you have asked for a few more details, so here goes.

Timeframe?  As soon as you can, next couple of weeks would be great.

Colors?  Any color is fine.  Just maybe not pink?  or other girlie color?  He is after all a grown man.

Thanks so much for interest in helping us out!

Ugh!

over the past few months i think i've turned into a bit of a hermit.  i used to be a social person.  i was always up for a party and always ready to go out.  but lately, unless it's to hang out with you knitting people, i'm just not interested.  and i'm kind of feeling bad about it.

tonight, i'm going out against my will.  because j who is really the anti-social one in our relationship wants to go out.  he's not saying it out loud and i know that if i were to tell him that i couldn't bear it, he wouldn't press. but if i say no to certain friends one more time, they're going to think we're avoiding them, which we aren't.  and i'll probably have a good time.

ugh.  i don't even have the energy to drive home.

but i do have some knitting to show you.

Bright

it's gray, wet and stormy today.  i woke up to thunder and lightening.  totally fucked up at this time of year by the way.  and on storrow drive, my car almost got swallowed up by a huge puddle.

so i could really use a little brightness.  happy friday!

A is for ....

I'M IN IN 2008!!!

if you recall, i participated in this along only peripherally in 2006 because i had missed the deadline.  if you'd like to see my posts/pictures from 2 years ago you can click here or check out my ABC photo album .

but this year, i'm officially in.

2174629028_7fbe250d97_o

and i am pumped!  ha!

so here we go.  for the letter A i've got two.

A is for apple.

a is for apple

and

A is for alpaca!

a is for alpaca

one of the challenges of this along is to post photographs of things/places/etc. that reflect your personality or are meaningful to you.  in the coming year, my subjects may not appear to fit these criteria.  i'm not a particularly huge fan of the apple, for example.  (although i do love alpacas.)  but it's almost impossible to not include a bit of myself in every photograph i take, because every image is a reflection of how i see the world around me.

by the way, this is post number 666.

heh heh.

Not So Secret Knitting

i've been a knitting machine in the past 3 weeks.  well, it's easy to make a lot of knitting progress when you're off from work, but whatever.  i have some projects to show.

1.  my last project of 2007 was the celestine tree topper.   my version isn't a tree topper but a jingling "ball" toy for my 1 year old niece.

celestine ball

i used 12 different colors of patons classic merino (and size US6 dpns -- oops i meant size US3) and i put in two big jingle bells.   half the fun was letting j think that i was making a hat.  j's not a big fan of multi-colored jester hats.  when he saw that i had made a toy, he was considerably less horrified and may have admitted that  it was kind of cute.

2.  my first elizabeth zimmerman project, the baby surprise jacket.  this jacket is also for my little niece.  i hope it fits.  anyway, this was a fun knit and super easy if you aren't afraid of following a pattern that's written more like a list of  suggestion than an actual pattern.

baby surprise jacket

i used caron's simply soft in paisley print that i had in my stash.  yeah, it's acrylic, but if my niece is going to wear this, it needs to be easy care because there's no way her mom is handwashing anything.  the buttons were purchased from graceful stitches.

and finally ....

3.  kate gilbert's super cute bird in the hand mittens.

bird in hand

i made my version with ella rae classic in burgundy red and off white.  i was a woman obsessed making these mittens and after a good blocking which took care of the slight puckering from the stranded knitting, i'm really pleased with how these turned out.

picot edge

i love the picot edge.

two birds close-up

and the little birds on the thumbs.

that's all i've got for now.

Back to Work

and i was just getting used to being a "kept woman."

it's bad enough having to get up at the crack ass of dawn to go back to work after almost 2 weeks off.  but when it's barely 5 degrees out, minus 14 with the windchill, that's just mean.  hey god.  come over here.  lean in, so i can poke you in the eye.  closer.  there you go.  *boink*  how's that feel?!

on a positive note, being back at work means i have more time for blogging.  HA!

anyway, just a little housekeeping today, kind of related to my january 1 post.  but with much less navel-gazing.

first of all, a group of us have gotten together to encourage each other to get healthier this year.  i've created a group on ravelry called "less w8 in 08."  (again, i'm cracking myself up here.)  if you're in ravelry and would like to join, please do.  it's awkward to "invite"someone to the group because it's a little like saying "hey, you're fat.  want to join our group?"  which is not the intent at all, especially since i'm the only fat person in the group.   if you aren't in ravelry, i'm sorry, you're on your own.

also, i've joined two other groups:  the NaSpinMoFo whatever it's called and the 2008 version of ABC. Naspimomo_button

Abc_2008_button

if you recall, i played along in 2006 without officially joining.  but this year, it's official.  anyway, for more information on both these groups, just go see carole.  i'm too lazy to go into the details and she's done a wonderful job explaining.

that's all i've got for today.  oh... one more thing.  don't forget:

a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

And Another Year Begins

last year, i listed my resolutions for the year.  this year, i'm doing a recap.  which resolutions did i stick with?  which ones did i give up on?  what's new for 2008?

1. walk/run 100 miles to April 1 along with rachel -- commit to using my elliptical trainer and join a gym if necessary and then actually go.

Yeah, that didn't last long.  I don't think it lasted past the first week.  so this resolution is back on my list.  again.  and to show my good intent, i'm going to go for my inaugural walk after i finish this post.

2.  lose on average 1 lb  0.5lb (per a physician's advice) a week.  i feel a little foolish making this resolution for the gazillionth time.  but like a smoker trying to quit, the odds are that one doesn't succeed the first, third or 50th time.

Ha!  I bet you thought this resolution died a quiet death too.  I'll admit that I let things go early on, with the best of intentions in the morning and ending the day with "i'll start tomorrow.  i promise."  and then in september, in a last ditch effort, i joined jenny craig.   i've since lost about 11 lbs.  it's been slow, but it's better that way.  it's true, i eat jenny meals for the most part.  they are ... ok.  but i've increased my vegetable consumption, eating more than the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, and i've really cut down on the number of servings of carbs, my "bete noir."  and then there's my counselor, which is probably the best thing about the plan.   i can lie to myself, but she keeps me honest.

so for 2008, my resolution is to continue on this path.   i'll continue to post about my progress here

for my regular life

1.  a new job and/or career plan in 2007.

i'm still at my old job but in 2007 i decided to pursue a teaching certificate to teach high school biology.  to help me prepare for exams that i'm taking this spring, i took a general biology class in the fall.  i kicked ass, scoring perfectly on every exam.  i guess you can take the girl out of the lab but you can't take the lab out of the girl.

2.  a new home for 2007 -- it's time to move -- this is something that J and I both want and have talked about for years now.  a couple of weekends ago we saw a house that we both loved but was a bit impractical for our lifestyle.  but it inspired me anyway to dream again.  see, i don't always go after what i want for fear that i somehow don't deserve it.

this didn't happen but with the new windows and the new siding,  and in 2008, an updated basement, it'll almost be like getting a new house.

3.  cut down on tv watching -- be more selective in my choices.  i don't read nearly as much as i used to and watching bad television means that i spend less time in my already full schedule being active.

i only watch tv if i'm spinning or knitting.  i don't (and can't) just sit there.  so i may not watch less television, but at least now i'm productive.  thanks to the writers' strike, there will be even less tv in my future.  i'm not a big fan of reality television.

for my creative life

1.  inspired by the great site photojojo, i'm going to take a picture a day for a year.  i'll be posting those photos here.

i did this until november.  the purpose of this exercise was to improve my photography.  by imposing a one photo a day rule to my life and with my schedule of spending daylight hours  either in my car, or in a windowless office, i sometimes just took stupid pictures of things like the crap in my yard without really thinking about what i was doing.  and that wasn't really what i wanted to do.

i also pushed myself by submitting some of my photos for the knitty calendar.  i didn't make the calendar, but my photos did make the honorable mention pool.  and i also did better than expected with my photo cards, especially since i expected that no one would be interested.  these were small successes but were very exciting for me.

2.  push myself knitting and spinning wise -- more socks, more lace.  in 2006 i tried socks, lace and i learned how to spin.  this year i need to progress past the basics.  try my hand at some dyeing too.  i have a kit that i've yet to use.

did i progress?  i don't know.  i did spin though. and i knit and i crocheted.  i jumped on the ripple bandwagon, pushing a few of you over to the dark side, for which i'm very proud.  i experimented with fun fur without being dragged through the mud.  ha!  i knit lace socks and a chevron scarf.  i joined up and did my own thing.  didn't do any real dyeing though.  that's on my list for 2008.

i finished these in 2007!

3.  get on paper or in yarn ideas that i have and not belittle those ideas.

who knew that in 2007, my fun fur x-mas tree would make it on tv?  thanks stitchy and knitty gritty.   and thanks to those of you who have liked my gathered scarf pattern.  i've got other ideas for 2008.  i guarantee that some will hurt your eyes, i hope, in a good way of course.

4.  start and finish both the lizard ridge and mitered square blankets.  in general, actually start projects instead of thinking about starting them.

well i never started the lizard ridge or the mitered square.  a ripple afghan distracted me.  for 2008, i can add the babette to the list.

5.  stop comparing what i do with what everyone else does.

i might as well stop being who i am.  i guess i could stop reading blogs, looking at flickr, raverly, books, etc.  or i can just learn to use those feelings of inadequacy for good rather than evil.

6.  get past chapter 3 of the photoshop for dummies book and actually learn how to use photoshop.

failed.  still haven't gotten past chapter 3.  but this week i'm signing up for a digital workshop at the New England School of Photography.

****************************************

on balance, i think i did pretty well.  the exercise thing didn't work too well, but i'm 11 lbs lighter than i was at this time last year.  i'm a better photographer.  i still haven't lost my science mojo.  and i'm not nearly as afraid of putting myself out there.

now, i'm going to crawl out  of my navel and wish you all a great 2008.

here's to good health, love, and success, however you define it.

ok, now i have to go for a walk.
